Kuala Lumpur at night, in three frames

No software this time. Three phone photos from a KL night: tracks that push the city away, tail lights that turn the rails red, and Jalan Alor squeezing everyone together.

The KL skyline at the end of the tracks

There is no version number in this one.

By day it's a screen and the small details nobody notices. At night, what ends up on the phone is much the same kind of thing: a city that's always there, that few people stop to look at.

Tracks that push the city away

From the footbridge, a few tracks split and rejoin underfoot, then bend together into the dark. The Petronas Towers and Merdeka 118 stand at the far end, lit so brightly they hardly seem to share a city with this patch of gravel.

Up close: weeds, a signal box, one lamp too white to look at. Kuala Lumpur's skyline rarely shows up on its own. It peeks through the gaps, past old rooftops, a palm tree, a billboard.

Under the red lights

A rapidKL train waits beneath the station slab, two tail lights on, turning the rails into two red lines that run right up to your feet.

Above it: steel frames, pipes, pothos spilling from a planter. All day people walk across overhead, rushing for trains, eyes on their phones. This short stretch of red is only visible from the railing.

Jalan Alor

At night Jalan Alor is roofed with string lights, red lanterns and fat-bellied koi lanterns. Underneath, people press shoulder to shoulder, and the seafood signs, the skewer smoke and several languages all blur together as the crowd inches forward.

One man in a red cap turned around just as the shutter went, with a look that says "stuck again?". It's the most common expression on this street, and yet nobody actually turns back.

Software gets updated one version at a time. These street corners don't. Next time we pass, they'll probably look just the same, with a different crowd standing in them.
